Youth 'thrashed to death' at rehab centre in Bhubaneswar
Sumanta Panda, 36, was allegedly beaten to death at a Bhubaneswar rehab centre. Family alleges multiple injuries. Police investigate.
Ayouth was allegedly beaten to death at a rehabilitation centre under Airport police limits in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Sumanta Panda (36), a resident of Unit-6 area in the capital city.
According to the allegations, family members admitted Sumanta to the rehabilitation center on Sunday evening. To their shock, they were later informed that he had been admitted to the hospital the same night. Mysteriously, officials at the rehab center transferred Sumanta to the hospital around 4 a.m. on Monday and instructed the hospital staff to notify the family about his death.
Upon receiving the news, the family of the deceased hurried to the hospital, only to find that no officials from the rehabilitation center were present. The family members of the deceased also alleged that there were multiple injury marks on Sumanta's body.
In response to the complaint, the police arrived at Capital Hospital to begin the autopsy process. Further investigations into the matter are ongoing.
It is important to note that physical torture at de-addiction centers is not a new phenomenon. Incidents of physical abuse against inmates at rehabilitation centers have previously been reported in the Dhauli and Bharatpur areas of Bhubaneswar.
