Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government's programme, the Odisha Liveable Habitat Mission (OLHM) or Jaga Mission, which grants land rights to lakhs of slum inhabitants, has won the Asia-Pacific Housing Forum Innovation Awards 2021.

It was nominated in the category of Public Policy Innovation.

An international panel chose the inclusive project to provide slum dwellers with land tenure stability and better living habitats as the winner of a competitive procedure that included 50 programmes from across the Asia Pacific region.

The Housing and Urban Development Department tweeted on Thursday, "Jaga Mission has emerged as a torchbearer for the developing globe by effectively showcasing a programme altering informal settlements and the lives of slum dwellers."

In Odisha, over 175,000 slum dwellers have been given land tenure security, and 550 slums in 28 cities have been converted into livable environments, according to the report.

Jaga Mission, which was launched in May 2018, won bronze at the 2019 World Habitat Awards, which honours unique, excellent, and revolutionary ideas, initiatives, and programmes from throughout the world. World Habitat, a UK-based organisation, presents the yearly prize in collaboration with UN-Habitat.

The world's largest slum titling and upgradation initiative is being carried out in collaboration with reputable philanthropic organisations such as Tata Trusts and the Norman Foster Foundation, with the goal of providing land to slum dwellers and transforming all slums in the state into habitable habitats.

The participatory slums degradation programme's second phase intended to integrate urban poor settlements into the city fabric by improving basic facilities and services.

The Innovation Awards, presented by the Asia-Pacific Housing Forum, honour and recognise innovators and disruptors in the affordable housing sector.
