Puri: On Thursday, special rituals are being performed at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Odisha's Puri to commemorate Phalguna Sukla Dashami.
Phagu Dashami, observed on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Phalguna, ushers in the week-long Dola Purnima festival. According to the traditional Odia calendar, it is celebrated six days before Purnima (full moon day) in Phalgun month.
Dola Yatra is one of the 12 major festivals observed at this pilgrim town's 12th century shrine. On Phagu Dashami, the image of Dolagobinda, representing Lord Jagannath, will be carried in procession to a dias called Dola Vedi at Shri Jagannath Ballav mutt, where special rituals will be performed.
The main attraction of the day is a game of Phagu (colored powder) between the three deities. Darshan of the sibling deities between Phagu Dashami and Dola Purnima is thought to be extremely auspicious.
The deities at the Temple will be dressed in 'Chacheri Besha,' and they will be served 'Chachari Bhog' until Chaturdashi, while the siblings will be adorned with a variety of ornaments. Finally, Dola Purnima rituals will be performed in the Temple on March 7, when the sibling deities will be dressed in golden attire. On Dola Purnima, lakhs of devotees are expected to flock to the shrine to pay their respects to the deities.
