Bhubaneswar: A murder investigation has been launched into the mysterious death of a BTech graduate who allegedly died after jumping into the power channel of the Hirakud dam from the PC bridge on NH-53 under the Burla police limits in Odisha's Sambalpur district.

Chinmayee Priyadarshini Sahoo, a student at Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), went missing after attending the varsity's convocation on Tuesday night, and her body was discovered the next morning.

Police have charged her male friend, Pritiman Dey of BJB Nagar in Bhubaneswar, and Manas Tudu, a final year VSSUT student, under Sections 302, 201, and 34 of the IPC. On Wednesday, the two were detained for questioning.

Her family had filed a written complaint against them, suspecting that Chinmayee had been strangled to death. Pritiman was said to have accompanied her to the power channel. According to the sources, police seized a student's phone after he was heard telling someone over the phone to delete his Facebook account while the body was being recovered.

Chinmayee, from Madanpur Rampur in Kalahandi district, had received a job offer during placement but had not accepted it because she was studying for the CDS exam while in Bhubaneswar. She was only in Burla to receive her diploma before returning to the state capital in the evening.
