Former BMC chairman Dr. Jagannath Mohapatra passes away

Dr Jagannath Mohapatra, the former chairman of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, died on Wednesday at the age of 84 at his Saheed Nagar residence in the city.

Bhubaneswar: Dr Jagannath Mohapatra, the former chairman of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, died on Wednesday at the age of 84 at his Saheed Nagar residence in the city.

He was the last chairman of the municipality before it was renamed Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation in 2000. He is a doctor by profession. He also served as Vice President of the All India Mayors Association. He was a member of the Saheed Nagar Puja Committee.

He was a well-known philanthropist and politician who was born on January 14, 1939, in Karata Sasan, Cuttack. For several years, he had been a member of the Congress and was actively involved in party activities. Mohapatra worked at several hospitals in the city, including Capital Hospital. He also established the Jagannath Hospital in Saheed Nagar.

His wife, Sanghamitra Misra, is a well-known literary critic and writer who retired as Professor of Odia from Utkal University.

According to sources, his final rites will be performed at the Satyanagar crematorium here.
