The Inspiring Story of Bismaya Mahapatra and Harsha Trust

New Delhi:Harsha Trust, established in 2002 by Bismaya Mahapatra, is a leading development organization dedicated to empowering marginalized communities in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. With operations spanning 18 districts, 76 blocks, and 3,844 villages, the Trust has positively impacted the lives of 2.34 lakh vulnerable households through innovative livelihood models, institution-building, and women’s empowerment initiatives.

Inspired by the devastating 1999 Odisha super cyclone, Mahapatra left a successful corporate career to address the challenges faced by underserved communities. Today, Harsha Trust focuses on sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, women’s self-help groups, education, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), and natural resource management. Initiatives like the Lakhpati Model, solar-powered cold storages, and agro-horticulture practices have transformed farming and improved livelihoods, reducing migration and ensuring community resilience.

Guided by a rotational leadership model, the Trust is currently led by Executive Director Rashmi Adlekha, with Mahapatra serving as a mentor to shape its long-term vision for 2030. Harsha Trust continues to align development efforts with technology, market integration, and government partnerships to sustain growth and uplift rural communities.
