Nuapada: A Royal Bengal Tiger has sparked fear in Odisha's Nuapada district after allegedly killing an elderly woman in a village near the Sunabeba wildlife sanctuary.

Shiba Prasad Khamar, a Sunabeda forest ranger, confirmed the RBT killed the woman after examining the pug marks around the body and the pattern of attack on the deceased, identified as Sanamti Barik (65).

According to sources, on Sunday evening, an elderly woman from Jalamedhei village, located deep within the sanctuary, ventured out of her house to collect firewood. The prowling big cat pounced on the woman and dragged her to a location.

As a result of the distressed woman's screams, her family members and villagers rushed to her aid. By the time the villagers arrived, the tiger had killed her and devoured parts of her body. The villagers scared the big cat away.

Following notification, a team of forest officials led by the ranger paid a visit to the site on Monday.

"Though the big cat was not sighted around there, the attack was apparently by an RBT given the pug marks and the pattern of attack on the woman. "We are still investigating the incident," the ranger said, adding that the villagers have been warned to be on the lookout for the big cat.

The body has been taken away for an autopsy.
