Baripada: An elephant was discovered dead with its tusks removed in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district's Similipal wildlife sanctuary.

Speaking to media in Baripada on Thursday, Samrat Gowda DS, deputy director of Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) north division, said locals discovered the elephant carcass in Gopinathpur forest, Pithabata range of the sanctuary, on Wednesday and informed the Forest department.

A team of Forest officials and veterinarians went to the location and discovered its tusks had been severed. Veterinary doctors autopsied the carcass.

According to Gowda, Forest officials discovered an arrow lodged in the elephant's head and manually removed the rusks. The elephant was 8-9 years old when it was killed 2-3 days ago.

He stated that some poachers had killed the pachyderm and that efforts are being made to apprehend them.

Another elephant was discovered dead with its tusks removed in Talabandha wildlife range of Similipal sanctuary last week. In January 2021, the carcass of a 25-year-old tusker with missing tusks was discovered in a village in the district.
