Goods train derails in Angul, disrupting train services.
Anugul: The derailment of a cargo train over a bridge between Angul and Talcher Road early Tuesday has affected train services on the Dhenkanal-Sambalpur railway segment.
The freight train from Firozepur to Khurda Road left Angul station at 2.15 a.m., according to ECoR sources, and derailed 2 kilometres from Talcher Road. Around 2.35 a.m., nine waggons of the railway capsized, while one derailed.
The derailment was apparently caused by a flash flood. The track approaching the bridge from Angul has been washed out, while the retaining walls on both sides have been destroyed.
Accident relief trains were dispatched from both Sambalpur and Khurda Road. There have been no recorded casualties. The restoration and rerailment operations are being reviewed by the Divisional Railway Manager, Khurda Road.
A crane from Sambalpur will take care of the waggons on the Angul side, while a crane from Khurda Road will take care of the engine and subsequently the waggons on the Talcher side. The heavy water flow around the washout region is still going on. According to the ECoR, JCB has been dispatched to establish a diversion in order to restrict water flow for the purpose of plugging the breach.
Several trains have been cancelled as a result of the event, one has been short-terminated, and the routes of eight others have been diverted.
