New Delhi: According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), combining Covaxin and Covishield improves immunogenicity across two doses of the same vaccine.

The findings come from a study undertaken by the National Institute of Virology in Pune (NIV).

According to the study, vaccination with a combination of Covishield and Covaxin is not only safe, but also gives greater immunity against COVID-19 variations.

“The findings revealed that immunisation with an adenovirus vector platform-based vaccine followed by an inactivated whole virus vaccine was not only safe but also evoked superior immunogenicity,” according to the study.

The study included 98 participants, with 18 of them receiving two doses of various vaccines in Uttar Pradesh.

“Though India has so far adopted a homologous strategy (two doses of one vaccination) with Covishield and Covaxin, 18 patients mistakenly received Covishield as the first jab and Covaxin as the second,” according to the report.

The first of these studies has not yet been peer-reviewed.

Researchers compared the safety and immunogenicity profiles of people who got different vaccines to people who had two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin.

“We compared their (18 persons) safety and immunogenicity profile to those of those who received either Covishield or Covaxin. “The combined vaccine-safety regime's was demonstrated by lower and similar adverse effects following vaccination in all three groups,” they stated.

The heterologous group's immunogenicity profile against Alpha, Beta, and Delta variants was superior, and the participants' IgG antibody and neutralising antibody responses were also significantly stronger than in the homologous groups, according to the study.
