Malkangiri: Over 10 injured in stampede during Malyabanta Mahotsav
Malkangiri: A stampede during the Malyabanta Mahotsav, an annual cultural event in Odisha's Malkangiri, injured over ten people, some of them critically.
According to sources, the incident occurred on Tuesday night, the third day of the festival, following a massive surge during the event at DNK Ground in this district headquarters town.
The injured were taken to the district hospital for treatment. While some of them with minor injuries were released following preliminary treatment, those brought to the hospital were said to be in stable condition.
As 50,000 people flocked to the site to watch the cultural show, police officers on the ground struggled to keep the crowd under control. According to them, the primary draw was a musical performance by renowned vocalists Mantu Chhuria and Asima Panda.
The stadium can hold up to 30,000 people, and the large throng caused a rush. Despite the fact that the police had closed the two main entrance gates, people attempted to surge in.
The event received a huge number of visitors because it was held after a two-year hiatus owing to Covid-19 limitations.
On Makar Sankranti, a 45-year-old lady was murdered and eight others, including numerous children, were injured in a similar stampede on the Badamba-Gopinathpur bridge over the Mahanadi in Cuttack district.
