Padampur Bypoll: BJD, BJP, Congress Candidates File Nominations Today

Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, the nominees of Odisha's three major political parties—the BJD, the BJP, and the Congress—will file their nomination papers for the December 5 bypoll for the Padampur Assembly constituency.

The deadline for submitting nomination papers for the byelection is today.

While the ruling BJD fielded Barsha Singh Bariha, the daughter of late MLA Bijaya Ranjan Singh Bariha, the opposition BJP nominated Pradip Purohit, an ex-MLA and the party's State President of the farmers' wing, for the subsequent bypoll. Satya Bhusan Sahu was the Congress candidate in the by-election.

The BJP and BJD went to great lengths to court the farmers, who account for 80% of the assembly seat's 2.5 lakh voters.

After receiving complaints from farmers about alleged malpractices in disbursing crop insurance claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in Odisha, senior BJP leader and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar in Delhi on Wednesday and requested a thorough investigation into the functioning of the PMFBY and alleged malpractices by Odisha government officials during the crop cutting exercise.

Pradhan has also addressed this problem in a letter to Tomar. According to the Union Minister, officials from the revenue and disaster management, agriculture and farmer empowerment, and planning and convergence departments in Odisha ensure that CCEs run smoothly.

The state government promised a Rs 200 crore input subsidy to entice farmers, and the Centre approved an insurance payout.

The byelection was called after the death of the BJD MLA Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha in October.

The byelection will take place on December 5. The bypoll will be counted on December 8, and the election will be finished on December 10.
