Rare tortoise weighing 40kg rescued in Odisha

Jajpur: A unique turtle weighing about 40 kg was saved in Odisha's Jajpur district's Gopakul village.

According to accounts, Benudhar Jena was fishing in the Baitarani river on Friday about 5 p.m. when the turtle became entangled in the net. Jena brought the turtle along with him.

Following that, some people saw the turtle at Benudhar's residence and alerted Mangalpur IIC Rinarani Sahu and Cuttack Forest Division Officer Sanjay Kumar. Jyotiranjan Mohapatra of the Jajpur Road Forest Ranger Station was dispatched to save the turtle.

When Mohapatra was alerted, a joint team of Snake helpline member Pramod Kumar Sahu and Mangalpur Police, lead by IIC Sahu, accompanied him to the location and rescued the turtle. They gave it to the forest officers.

Following an extensive examination, the turtle was transferred to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar at the request of the Cuttack Forest Division Officer.

"The turtle was caught in the Baitarani River and taken to the forest division office." "It was eventually transferred to Nandankanan Zoo for better care," a forest official added.
