Bhubaneswar: Balangir Police on Monday disrupted another cough syrup ring, arresting 18 people from three districts in Odisha as part of a special operation initiated in February of this year.
Following a tip-off, over 1700 bottles of cough syrup, two costly automobiles, three motorcycles, and 17 mobile phones were taken from their possession during a raid in the Sudapada region of the district. According to sources, two Cuttack traders were detained, and efforts to apprehend them have been ongoing for several weeks.
In March of this year, at least 38 persons were arrested in the district for alleged involvement in an interstate cough syrup trafficking ring. A total of 12,960 bottles of Eskuf syrup worth Rs 35 lakh were recovered, along with one country-made weapon, three cars, two motorcycles, 17 mobile phones, cash, and other incriminating items. The bank accounts of two pharmaceutical businesses in Haryana and Kolkata, which manufacture and supply cough syrups, were also frozen.
Three people were detained a month later in Khaprakhol, Balangir district, for providing prohibited cough medication. They were found with 476 bottles of cough syrup.
During a search on Anil Nial's home in June, five people were detained for running a similar racket.
