Sambalpur: Every year on August 1, "Sambalpuri Din" or "Sambalpuri Day" is observed in honour of Satya Narayan Bohidar, the father of the Sambalpuri or Koshali language, who was born on that day.

Bohidar has made a significant effort in establishing Koshali as a unique language with its own syntax, pronunciation, and other differences from Odia. Even though Koshali is a language that is spoken throughout a considerable portion of Odisha, few authors in the pre-Independence era choose to write in it. It had mostly remained a spoken language.

Bohidar was the one who realised that unless anything is done to give the lovely language a boost, it will die slowly but surely. He made it his mission to not only publicise Koshali but also to make known to the general public all of its constituent parts that make it a language.

Bohidar, who was born on August 1st, 1913, in Subarnapur, is credited with creating the Sambalpuri or Kosali language and grammar. The district administration started commemorating the day as "Sambalpuri Din" in 2013 to mark his 100th birthday.

The district administration has ordered all officials to wear the Sambalpuri outfit on Monday in honour of his birthday and to spread awareness of his efforts.

To celebrate Sambalpuri Din, people dress traditionally, sing Sambalpuri music, and eat regional cuisine.
