Sambalpur University Vice Chancellor Sanjiv Mittal resigns

Bhubaneswar: According to official sources, Sanjiv Mittal, who became involved in a number of issues, has resigned from his position as vice chancellor of Sambalpur University in Odisha and his resignation has been accepted.

On August 28, Mittal submitted his resignation from the position due to a medical condition. Ganeshi Lal, the governor of Odisha and the university's chancellor, accepted it with effect from that day after careful consideration, they said.

The Chancellor further directed that the Sambalpur University PG Council Chairman will serve as acting vice chancellor until a regular VC was appointed or until further notice.

It should be remembered that suspicions of misappropriation of funds, contractual workers aiding in suicide, and giving false information about academic accomplishments against Mittal led to his leave of absence in July.

After submitting the leave request to the Chancellor's office, he handed the charges on to Dr. Sanjukta Dash, chair of the university's PG Council. On the basis of the accusations levelled against him, it was assumed that the decision to take a lengthy leave of absence was made in order to avoid formal action.

Both the Burla Police and the Lajpat Rai Law College Alumni Association have filed cases against Mittal for the self-immolation of the university's contract worker Dinabandhu Mishra. The Lajpat Rai Law College Alumni Association has filed a FIR against Mittal accusing him of embezzling funds from the college.

The Association said in the FIR that Mittal misused Rs 69,67,000 by forcibly transferring it from LR Law College to the institution. In May of this year, it reported the incident to the Dhanupali police station.

The vice-chancellor and Warden Biswajit Satpathy have been arrested in the suicide case of Mishra after the former's son filed a complaint. Mishra, who worked for the institution under contract, is said to have been harassed and mistreated. On April 20 of last year, as the academic council meeting was taking place on the university campus, he went to the extreme of setting himself on fire.

In his application for the VC position, Mittal was also accused of giving false information about his intellectual accomplishments.
