Top Maoist leader Dubashi Sankar held in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: DGP Abhay informed DGP Abhay here on Tuesday that notorious Maoist commander Dubashi Shankar was captured from Koraput under the Boipariguda police limits, marking a big victory for Odisha Police.

The DGP told reporters that the Odisha government has declared a reward of Rs 20 lakh for Shankar's capture. This is the first time a high-ranking Maoist has been apprehended in 20 years.

Shankar was a top leader of the outlawed CPI (MaoistAndhra )'s Odisha Zonal Committee, as well as the military committee.

He is suspected of being engaged in the 2009 Damanjodi attack, which resulted in the deaths of nine CISF members. His role in the 2010 Gobindapalli landmine blast, which killed 11 Odisha police officers, would also be investigated, according to the DGP.

According to the DGP, the Maoist leader is also accused of being involved in the Janiguda ambush, in which three senior BSF officials were slain.

Shankar was arrested by the Boipariguda police and taken to court today. According to the DGP, the police will petition for his remand, after which he will be interrogated in connection with the cases.

DVF of Koraput police, SOG, and BSF carried out the raid. His possessions included an INSAS rifle, ammunition, and cell phones, which were all seized by police.

Other Maoist cadres present at the scene reportedly fled and opened fire in the Boipariguda forest today at noon, according to the DGP, who added that more information is awaited. They've left some weapons and ammunition behind.
