Cuttack: Justice Subhasis Talapatra was sworn in as the 33rd Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court on Tuesday.
Governor Ganeshi Lal administered the oath of office to the new Chief Justice during a ceremony on the court grounds in Cuttack, Odisha. He took over for Justice Dr. S Muralidhar, who stepped down on Monday.
Justice Talapatra will be Chief Justice for less than two months before retiring on October 3, 2023.
Last month, the Supreme Court collegium recommended his name for the position, citing his extensive experience dispensing justice in two High Courts. "While considering his name, the collegium considered the fact that the high court of Tripura has not had representation among the Chief Justices of the high courts since its inception in 2013," the resolution stated.
Justice Talapatra was born in Udaipur, Tripura, on October 4, 1961. On September 12, 1990, he graduated in Arts and Law from the University of Calcutta and was admitted to the Bar Councils of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
He primarily practiced at the Gauhati High Court's Agartala Bench and was later designated as a Senior Advocate on December 21, 2004.
On November 15, 2011, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court, and on September 13, 2013, he was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Tripura High Court. He was the Court's Acting Chief Justice twice, from November 2, 2018, to November 13, 2018, and from November 11, 2019, to November 15, 2019. On June 1, 2022, he was transferred to the Orissa High Court and took the oath of office on June 10, 2022.
