Cuttack: On Saturday night, a patient died at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack while undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment.

He is the first patient to pass away at SCB's ECMO unit.

The deceased was from Pattamundai in Kendrapada, according to SCB authorities. On August 29, he was brought to the Cuttack hospital after testing positive for COVID. His lungs were infected later, and he was transferred from the Corona ward to the ECMO unit.

Also on Saturday night, a Health Department employee was admitted to SCB's ECMO unit. He was transferred from a Bhubaneswar private hospital.

Three patients are currently being treated in the Cardiothoracic Department's ECMO unit. The SCB has assembled a team of specialists to identify people who require ECMO treatment.

In the last week of August, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dedicated nine ECMO machines to SCB.

The state government, according to the CM, would cover all costs associated with providing ECMO treatment to critical COVID patients at SCB. “To combat the third wave, we must be more cautious,” he continued.
