Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) cameras will soon be installed in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to enhance security measures against crime, criminals, and traffic violations. This announcement was made by Twin City Police Commissioner S. Debadatta Singh on Monday. He stated that the use of AI-enabled cameras will strengthen public safety in these rapidly urbanizing cities.

Improved Surveillance through AI

The new AI technology will significantly aid in identifying both traffic offenders and criminal activities. The Police Commissioner emphasized the importance of such innovations in maintaining law and order in these bustling urban centers.

Comprehensive Security Upgrade

In addition to the installation of AI cameras, plans include expanding closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage and increasing the number of security personnel. These efforts aim to provide comprehensive surveillance for the community, thereby enhancing security and giving residents greater peace of mind. According to the Police Commissioner, Bhubaneswar is a smart city where 1,000 CCTV cameras have already been installed at several prominent junctions. He noted that these cameras are insufficient given the rise in population and other factors.

“The AI-enabled cameras will be equipped with facial recognition technology, allowing for the clear identification of culprits. The entire analysis will be AI-driven, leading to increased efficiency in service delivery, law enforcement, and other security measures by the Commissionerate Police,” said the Police Commissioner.

Surveillance in Vulnerable Areas

Sources indicate that locations for the installation of AI cameras have been identified through an assessment conducted by the respective police stations. This assessment took into account crime-prone areas and included suggestions from civil society and other stakeholders.

The Commissionerate Police has encountered several burglaries and other crimes, which have highlighted the need for additional CCTV cameras. The Police Commissioner mentioned that this expansion could also involve public partnerships.

Apartment Security

“We previously requested apartment complexes to install CCTV cameras. While several have done so, some of these cameras are not in working condition. It is the responsibility of the apartment societies to ensure that all security mechanisms are functional,” the Police Commissioner added.
