Century-old bridge collapses In Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Late Thursday night, a 100-year-old bridge between Sambalpur city and Kuchinda town in the district fell. Although no one was killed, the driver of a dumper that was crossing the bridge at the time was gravely hurt.

The bridge over the Kharla river broke at 10 p.m., according to sources, while the dumper was crossing it. The truck became stuck in the bridge's shattered sections, which were built under British administration. While the dumper's helper jumped into the river, the driver became trapped inside the wrecked vehicle.

When police and firefighters were alerted, they hurried to the scene and attempted to save the driver. His legs were trapped in the debris and broken pieces of the dumper, making it difficult for the rescue squad to get him out.

After nearly 10 hours of effort on Friday morning, the team retrieved gas cutters, cut through the truck, and rescued the driver. He was transported to a Kuchinda hospital.

The bridge collapse has cut off road communication between Sambalpur and Kuchinda on National Highway 49.
