Nirbhay Cruise Missile Test-Fired Off Odisha Coast

Bhubaneswar: On Wednesday, India's first indigenous technology cruise missile (ITCM), Nirbhay, was successfully test-launched from a Chandipur defence station off the coast of Odisha, using a Made-in-India Manik turbo fan engine.

The engine, according to DRDO sources, operated as planned. To grasp new technologies, more testing will be undertaken.

According to The Hindustan Times, the subsonic cruise missile was launched at 9.55 a.m. and tested for 100 kilometres in flight and 15 minutes in time.

The ITCM is a more advanced version of the Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile. It has advanced software as well as more indigenous technology, such as a short turbofan engine and a sophisticated radio frequency seeker.

The Gas Turbine Research Establishment developed the turbo fan engine, while the Research Centre Imarat invented the radio frequency seeker.

The navigation area warning is issued for a range of around 400 km for the ICTM test, despite the prior version of Nirbhay having a strike range of 800 km to 1,000 km. The missile will travel vertically for roughly 150 kilometres after take-off before performing a steep drop and following a horizontal trajectory, according to the New Indian Express.
