Dates for Elections to Urban Civic Bodies announced by Odisha SEC

Bhubaneswar: On Friday, the State Election Commission (SEC) published the dates for elections to the state's urban local bodies (ULBs).

According to the SEC, elections will be held on March 24 in 106 ULBs, including 3 municipal corporations, 47 municipalities, and 59 NACs.

Between March 2 and 7, nominations for various positions will be accepted. While the examination will take place on March 9, the deadline to withdraw nominations is March 14. The counting of votes will be held on March 26.

Elections will be held in 1,731 wards across municipalities and NACs, with 3,030 polling stations set up. More than 27 lakh people can exercise their franchise in the elections to municipalities and NACs.

Also, the decisions will be directed for complete 168 wards in 1,407 corners of three municipal corporations . An expected 14.26 citizens are qualified to project their votes in this political race.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has 67 wards and 705 booths, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has 59 wards and 452 booths, and Berhampur Municipal Corporation has 42 wards and 250 booths (BeMC).

BeMC's term ended in September 2018, while BMC's and CMC's ended in January and February, respectively.

For the first time, the Commission announced that there will be a NOTA option in the ULB elections.

The election of the chairperson and mayor will be held directly this time, marking another another first. Each booth will have two electronic voting machines (EVMs) in different compartments for this purpose.

One EVM will be used to vote for councillors and corporators, while the other will be used to vote for the chairperson and mayor. The Commission stated that voting for councillor and corporator positions will be conducted on pink ballot paper, while voting for chairperson and mayor positions will be conducted on yellow ballot paper.
