Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met with Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal on Wednesday and requested his intervention in ensuring justice for a woman home guard who was allegedly tortured by the wife of a senior IPC officer.

A delegation of state BJP leaders met with the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar and told him about the agony of the woman home guard who blamed DIG of Police Brijesh Rai's wife for her suicide attempt, in which she lost both her limbs.

State BJP vice president Lekhashree Samantsinghar told reporters that action must be taken against the IPS officer and his wife, accusing the state government of attempting to cover up the incident by transferring the DIG from Angul to the state police headquarters.

Apart from that, she stated that the victim's two daughters should be given jobs and that justice must be served to the victim.

Souridri Sahu, a female home guard, has made serious allegations against DIG Rai's wife, claiming that she attempted suicide after being tortured and losing both legs. She is receiving care at a private hospital in Cuttack.

As a result of the outpouring of criticism, the Odisha government transferred Rai, a 2009-batch IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh's Mau district, to the state police headquarters in Cuttack on Tuesday.

The IPS officer, on the other hand, dismissed the allegations of harassment and blamed the victim's drastic action on mental distress caused by personal issues.

Meanwhile, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has requested a report on the incident from the Director General of Police (DGP).

Following news reports, the Commission took suo motu cognizance of the matter and issued an order directing the DGP to conduct an investigation into the incident. The report must be submitted by the state police chief by September 15.
