Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has implemented a tracking system to monitor the real-time movement of garbage collection vehicles in the city to ensure timely collection and disposal and to reduce malpractice by sanitary staff.

The integrated command centre (ICC), the high-tech platform that oversees various municipal services, can now track around 400 GPS-enabled light commercial vehicles (LCV) carrying household waste.

"We want to ensure that vehicles arrive at residents' doors on time and that there is no waste pendency." "There have been several instances of waste collectors delaying or skipping collection," according to BMC Commissioner Vijay Kulange.

Kulange emphasized that this tracking system will serve as a deterrent to such practices.

Residents will be able to track waste vehicles' real-time movements using the Safa app beginning September 1. This monitoring system will also allow for the evaluation of individual LCV operators' performance. Those who frequently avoid assigned duties can now be identified and relieved of their duties.

He also stated that the city's door-to-door waste collection will be expanded by adding 40 more LCVs to the current fleet of 395.
