Annual bird census begins in Chilika

Berhampur: On Tuesday morning, the annual bird count at Chilika Lake was conducted. The drill involved at least 21 teams, totaling 105 Forest Department officers.

Officials from the Chilika Development Authority (CDA), experts from the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Wild Odisha, Grow With Nature, Elephant Trust, and members of several social organisations made up the surveyor teams.

"Each group consisted of four to five people, including one staff member, one resource person, and other tour guides. "By 5-6 p.m., we'll have the report," an official added.

Satapada, Rambha, Balugaon, Tangi, and Chilika were among the five ranges where the census was conducted. The survey work was carried out by 18 teams, with the majority of them working in terrestrial areas and the rest in aquatic areas.

The largest brackish water lagoon in Asia is Chilika Lake. The lake, which spans the districts of Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam, is around 1,100 square kilometres in size.

Every year, migratory birds from northern Eurasia, the Caspian region, Siberia, Kazakhstan, Lake Baikal, and remote areas of Russia and neighbouring countries visit the lake and return home before summer arrives.
