Bhubaneswar: Puri and Bhubaneswar broke the all-time highest single-day rainfall record in September, thanks to a depression over the Bay of Bengal.

Puri has received 329 millimetres of rain since 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, breaking the 87-year-old record of 210.8 millimetres set on September 20, 1934. This is also the heaviest amount of rain ever recorded in a single day.

On Sunday, large portions of Pilgrim Town were flooded, while tourists visiting the Sun Temple in Konark had to wade through knee-deep water as the heritage site's grounds were saturated due to the heavy rain.

Similarly, Bhubaneswar experienced its wettest September in 63 years on Sunday, with 195 mm of rain. On September 5, 1958, the city received the maximum total of 163 mm.
