Odisha Civic Polls: EVM machines sent to 15 districts

Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission has dispatched Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to 15 districts in the first phase, bringing elections to 105 municipalities in the state closer, most likely soon after the Panchayat polls. EVMs were distributed to five districts on Wednesday and ten districts on Thursday.

Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Berhampur municipal corporations will also hold elections.

A notification on ward-wise restructuring and reservation had already been issued by the district collectors of all districts. People had until November 14 to file their objections to the notification, after which the collectors reviewed the complaints and issued a final list of ward-by-ward rearrangement and reservation.

However, due to unresolved court proceedings, ward reservation lists in Rourkela and Sambalpur have not been issued, casting doubt on the holding of civic elections in these two cities.

On December 29, the final lists are expected to be released.
