New Delhi: The BJP has chosen former Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu as its presidential candidate.

The choice was made at the BJP's parliamentary board meeting, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over.

JP Nadda, the head of the BJP, addressed the news conference and stated that following lengthy deliberations with NDA allies, it was decided that the presidential candidate should be from the Northeast and should be a woman from a tribal group.

A tribal person from Odisha named Murmu will compete against former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, who has been nominated as the rival candidate.
