Mayurbhanj: Draupadi Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha and a former governor of Jharkhand who has been nominated as the BJP-led NDA's presidential candidate, performed prayers and cleaned shrines on Wednesday in Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj district.

On Wednesday morning, Murmu made prayers at the Lord Jagannath, Hanuman, and Shiv temples at Rairangpur. Before saying prayers, she cleaned the grounds of the Purnandeswar Shiv temple.

Additionally, she made a prayer visit to Rairangpur's Prajapita Brahma Kumari Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya.

Following her candidacy as a presidential contender, the Center granted Murmu Z+ security.

If elected, she will follow V V Giri, the first tribal President of India and the second woman president, as the second leader born in Odisha to hold the office of president of India.

Murmu was regarded as one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's top picks five years ago, when President Pranab Mukherjee was about to leave Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Murmu, who was born on June 20, 1958, presided over Jharkhand from 2015 until 2021.

Before entering state politics, Murmu, an Odisha native from the Mayurbhanj area, worked as a teacher. She served as the minister of commerce, transport, fisheries, and animal husbandry for the BJP-BJD coalition government that took office in 2000. She was a two-time BJP MLA from Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj (2000 and 2009).
