Bhubaneswar: Sunil Kumar Bansal, the Director General of Police (DGP), warned miscreants disrupting the panchayat elections on Thursday that violence during the polling process will be dealt with harshly.

Following a meeting with the State Election Commission here, the DGP told the media that any form of violence during the polls will not be condoned.

"Poll violence perpetrators are being apprehended." "No one will be spared if they disturb the voting process," he stated.

The SEC had earlier called a meeting with the chief secretary, secretary of the Home Department, and the DGP to discuss the steps for a peaceful election in the next four stages.

State Election Commissioner Aditya Prasad Padhi took serious note of the violent incidents during polling on Wednesday, and directed the DGP to ensure law and order during the rest phases.

According to reports, district collectors proposed to the SEC to hold re-polling in 25 locations after occurrences of polling process disruptions in many sections of the state on the first day of polling. Political parties have also submitted memorandums alleging violent meddling in the run-up to the election and during the election itself.

Snatching of ballot boxes, shredding of ballot sheets, both capturing and creating commotion, and ransacking of poll booths were among the violent occurrences. The miscreants had also accosted journalists and damaged their equipment in one location.
