Bhubaneswar: Congress leader and Odisha MLA Suresh Routray announced his retirement from electoral politics on Thursday, saying he will not contest any future elections.

The fiery Congress leader, who represents Jatni in the state Assembly, told reporters in Bhubaneswar that his younger son Manmath Routray will now enter politics and run for the Jatani Assembly seat.

Routray, stated that he has been a loyal Congressman for the last 55 years and that his son will run for Congress as well.

"I will no longer run for office. I am now 80 years old and have worked in Congress for over 55 years. "My youngest son Manmath will now run for Congress from Jatani," the senior leader announced.

The Congress stalwart also stated that he paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday and discussed his elder son Sidharth's mountaineering achievements. The discussion was limited to Sidharth's success as a mountaineer, and no political issues were raised, according to Routray.

It should be noted that Sidharth Routray scaled the world's highest peak, Mt Everest, last year.
