Bhubaneswar: Congress legislators in Odisha Assembly created an uproar on Monday, paralyzing proceedings in the House, as they intensified their protest against Rahul Gandhi's disqualification as a Lok Sabha member.

As soon as the House reconvened for the day, Congress members stormed into the well and caused a commotion, calling the removal of their leader from Parliament "murder" of democracy.

During question hour, Congress members dressed in black and wore black caps, causing an uproar in the House. Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukha adjourned the House until 4 p.m. because he found it difficult to conduct business.

Earlier, opposition legislators marched to the Assembly building, raising anti-Rahul disqualification slogans and calling the act "murder of democracy." They yelled that "dictatorship" would not be tolerated in their country.

Senior party leader and MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati told reporters outside the House that democracy had been murdered. "As a protest, we are observing Black Day." "Our party MLAs are wearing black clothes and caps to express our displeasure," said the Jeypore MLA.

Rejecting the allegations made by Congress MLAs, BJP Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jayanarayan Mishra stated that the action taken against Rahul Gandhi was legal. "How can they call it democracy murder?" he asked.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who represents Wayanad in Kerala, was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Surat, Gujarat, convicted him in a defamation case.

The court sentenced Gandhi to two years in prison in the defamation case stemming from his remarks about the "Modi surname" at a 2019 election rally in Karnataka.

Meanwhile, Congress's nationwide protest on the issue entered its second day today.
