Bhanjanagar: Normal life was disrupted in Bhanjanagar, Ganjam, Odisha, due to a dawn-to-dusk shutdown demanding that Ghumsar be granted separate district status.
The 12-hour bandh, organized by the Ghumsar Kriyanusthan Committee, was supported by local units of political parties, social organizations, and other organizations. Around 40 organizations, including major political parties, joined the bandh to press the demand.
During the shutdown, shops and business establishments closed their doors, and vehicular traffic came to a halt. Ghumsar Kriyanusthan Committee members were seen picketing in strategic locations around town, holding placards and banners.
However, due to ongoing examinations, educational institutions such as schools and colleges have been exempted from the bandh's jurisdiction.
It should be noted that the Bhanjanagar sub-division in Ganjam district consists of eight blocks. For the past 30 years, the Ghumsar Kriyanusthan Committee has been advocating for district status for Ghumsar, which includes these eight blocks.
The demand for district status increased when several regions, some of which lacked infrastructure, increased their demand for district status.
Notably, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has stated that Padampur in Bargarh will be designated as a separate district by the end of this year.
