Bhubaneswar: The Odisha unit of the Congress demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday, launching a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government over the horrific train disaster at Bahanaga in Balasore district.

In a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Sarat Pattanayak and senior leader Bijay Patnaik said the Railway Minister should resign immediately in the aftermath of Friday's deadly train mishap.

Pattanayak accused the Narendra Modi government of engaging in propaganda at the expense of rail safety measures, claiming that a lack of adequate steps for the development of infrastructure and safety mechanisms had resulted in the tragic accident.

The PCC chief slammed the Railway Minister, alleging that he was making contradictory statements about the train accident.

The Railway Minister stated in the morning that those responsible for the mishap had been identified, but in the evening he requested a CBI investigation into the accident. This is unfortunate, and such deceptive statements are unacceptable, according to Pattanayak.

The Congress leader also demanded that each deceased person's family provide at least one member with employment.

Bijay Patnaik also chastised Vaishnaw for the way the railways were run and demanded his resignation. He believes the Railway Minister should resign because he is running the Ministry in a careless manner and adding that accountability should be fixed from top to bottom.
