Jharsuguda: Tankadhar Tripathy, a BJP candidate, filed his nomination on Monday for the May 10 by-election to Odisha's Jharsuguda Assembly constituency.

Tripathy led a grand procession of senior BJP leaders and workers to the office of Jharsuguda deputy collector, where he filed his nomination papers.

He began his rally by praying to Jhadeshwar Baba and Maa Kanakeswari Devi for their blessings.

Senior leaders present included BJP state president Manmohan Samal, former state presidents Samir Mohanty, Basant Panda, Jual Oram, and K V Singhdeo, Bargarh MP Suresh Pujari, Union Minister Bishweswar Tudu, and several party MLAs.

Tripathy stated that the by-election will be fought by the people of Jharsuguda and that he is only a medium in the fight against 'injustice' meted out to the constituency over the last 23 years of BJD rule.

Alleging that the BJD government has neglected the area, the BJP candidate stated that the people of Jharsuguda will give the ruling party a fitting response in the by-election.

Tripathy, who has been visiting various parts of the constituency and interacting with people to learn about their grievances, has highlighted issues such as a lack of development and acute drinking water scarcity in the area.

Former president of the BJP Yuva Morcha and current state secretary of the party, the 41-year-old law graduate began his political career as a student leader with the ABVP and has been politically active in his hometown of Jharsuguda.

It should be noted that Congress candidate Tarun Pandey filed his nomination papers on Saturday, while BJD's Deepali Das, daughter of slain minister Naba Kishore Das, received a party ticket on the same day from party president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

While the deadline for submitting nomination papers is April 20, nominations will be scrutinized the following day, and withdrawals will be accepted until April 24. The election will take place on May 10.

The bypoll was called in response to the alleged murder of Naba Kishore Das by a police officer on January 29.
