Jharsuguda: Congress candidate Tarun Pandey, filed his nomination on Saturday for the Jharsuguda Assembly by-election in Odisha, which is scheduled for May 10.

Pandey led an impressive procession of senior Congress leaders to the office of Jharsuguda deputy collector, where he filed his nomination papers.

Tarun was accompanied by Sarat Pattanayak, president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), Tara Prasad Bahinipati, MLA of the party, and Bijay Patnaik.

The PCC chief claimed that Congress has overwhelming support in the constituency and that residents are fed up with the ruling BJD due to rising unemployment and an acute drinking water shortage.

Tarun said he will raise issues such as pollution, drinking water scarcity, and unemployment among locals in the hopes of gaining voter support.

Tarun is the son of Biren Pandey, a former Jharsuguda MLA who died last month. In 1980, 1985, and 1995, the former MLA was elected to the Odisha Assembly on a Congress ticket.

While the ruling BJD has nominated Deepali Das, the daughter of slain Minister Naha Kishore Das, whose assassination prompted the bypoll, the BJP has nominated Tankadhar Tripathy, a youth leader.

The nomination period for the byelection, which began on April 13, will end on April 20.
