Former CBI Director Uma Shankar Mishra is no more

New Delhi: On Thursday, former CBI Director Uma Shankar Mishra died at a private hospital in New Delhi.

He had been sick for a few days, according to sources.

The officer from Odisha's 1968 batch was the sole IPS officer to hold the top position in the central investigating agency. Before taking over as Director in December 2003, he worked for CBI as a Special Director.

Mishra was the major strategist in the extradition of underworld don Abu Salem and his girlfriend Monica Bedi from Portugal in November 2005, reportedly engaged in a 1993 series of bomb blasts in Mumbai that killed more than 250 people. He left the company a month later.

In 2009, he became the Editor of the Odia daily Surya Prava. He was also a member of Meghalaya's Planning Commission and a Microsoft India adviser.
