NHRC seeks report on Koraput ‘fake' encounter

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) summoned the Odisha government and demanded a four-week report on an alleged fake encounter in Koraput district on November 10, which resulted in the deaths of two people.

While hearing a case filed by rights activist and lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy, the Supreme Court requested the DGP, Collector, and SP of Malkangiri district to produce a thorough report on the exchange of fire with Special Operations Group (SOG) and the deaths of two people on Thursday.

The petitioner claimed that the encounter was staged and that the deceased had no ties to the banned organisation. "The facts and circumstances of the instances clearly show that the state is in a painful and dangerous position." "The two individuals were impoverished daily wagers," he added, adding that "the interaction amounts to a serious violation of people's human rights."

While Koraput police claimed to have shot two 'Maoists' in Malipadar forests under Boipariguda limits on November 11, family members of the slain tribals - Dhana Khamar of Sargiguda village under Malkangiri police limits and Jaya Kumar Nag of Nuagada under Kosagumuda police limits in Nabarangpur - claimed that the duo were daily wagers. On November 13, villagers and Dhana's family members stopped NH-326 near Kotameta in Malkangiri district, alleging that the encounter was staged and that the two were labelled as Maoists merely to cover up the error.
