Bhubaneswar: After three months of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment in Kolkata, Abhishek Mohapatra of Bhadrak, Odisha, died on Friday night from post-COVID complications.

The 28-year-old had tested positive for COVID just a month after his wedding and was admitted to Kalinga Hospital in Bhubaneswar on May 18. On May 20, he was sent to the intensive care unit. He was on 100% oxygen and suffering from pneumonia, prompting his family to make a fundraising appeal.

According to his brother's statement on milaap.org, the doctors have recommended ECMO assistance as the sole course of treatment left, with a near-certain lung transplant being the following step.

Critically-ill On June 7, Abhishek was ultimately airlifted to Kolkata after his family raised Rs. 3,508,957 of the required Rs. 1 crore for the air ambulance and his care. His therapy cost around Rs 1.5 lakh every day.

He was one of the first people to be flown out of the state for ECMO treatment. SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and AIIMS-Bhubaneswar currently offer the service.

Sangram Keshari Jena, the former president of the Odisha Youth Congress, died in a Hyderabad hospital in August from post-COVID problems. After his condition deteriorated, he was evacuated to the private healthcare centre on May 23 for ECMO treatment.
