Jajpur: An NRI Odia doctor has committed to donate Rs 1 crore to the construction of a Jagannath temple in his hometown of Jajpur, Odisha.

Dr. Bhaskar Chandra Nayak, a 43-year veteran of many New York City hospitals, is a devout follower of Lord Jagannath.

The temple will be built in Jagatpur village, on land that has already been donated by the residents. On June 1, Nayak and his wife, Indrajita, performed a 'bhumi puja' for the temple.

The temple is expected to cost between Rs 1 crore and Rs 1.5 crore to build. Construction is expected to begin after the monsoon and be completed within a year.

"Lord Jagannath is Odia culture's identity. It is because of Him that I am who I am today. I recall how my father carried me from my village to Puri Jagannath Temple on his shoulders. Furthermore, we have constructed a Jagannath temple in America to promote Odia culture and heritage," he was cited in a news source as stating.
