Newly-Wed Woman Found Hanging In Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal: A woman was found dead at her in-laws' residence less than 6 months after her marriage, with her parents alleging dowry abuse in Odisha's Dhenkanal district.

According to sources, Saharika Mahakud of Bangurasingha village married Ratikant Bhutia of Podapada village under the district's Motanga police limits on July 7, 2021. Saharika's family had given the groom's family jewelry, household items, and cash as dowry at the time of the marriage.

Saharika's in-law family discovered her hanging from a ceiling fan in her chamber at their home on Sunday. After being notified, police arrived and sent the deceased for a post-mortem examination.

Saharika's mother, Jaharana Mahakud, claims that her daughter's in-laws tortured her after the marriage to extract additional dowry. They were shocking her with electricity.

However, shortly after the marriage, Ratikant and his family members allegedly began abusing Saharika in order to extract additional payment. Saharika was discovered hanging from a fan in the house on Sunday, while everyone was busy celebrating the New Year. Her family members claimed it was a pre-planned dowry murder.

"When I arrived to attend Saharika's son's 21st day celebration, I discovered the entire family assaulting her. They hung her body after she died from electric shock. "I want justice for my daughter," she said, according to a local TV station.

However, Saharika's in-laws denied the charges, with her mother-in-law Champa Butia claiming that they were not torturing her and that she committed suicide.

Meanwhile, the police have opened a dowry torture investigation based on a complaint lodged by the victim's relatives. According to SDPO Suryamani Pradhan, the cause of death would be determined once the post-mortem report is received.
