Odisha Increases SC/ST Hostel Boarders' Pre-Matric Scholarships

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government enhanced pre-matriculation scholarships for hostel boarders from Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) on Monday.
According to a press release from the I&PR department, the pre-matriculation scholarship for boys has been increased from Rs 750 to Rs 950. Similarly, instead of Rs 800, girl boarders will now be entitled to Rs 1,000. The last time the scholarships were updated was in 2015.
Official sources indicated that an annual expenditure of Rs 490 crore would be incurred for pre-matric scholarships for boarders of schools under the ST & SC Development Department and the School & Mass Education Department.
It is primarily intended for hostel mess management and is geared toward the educational and overall development of ST and SC boarders.
To address boarders' nutritional security, the administration has also chosen to offer millet-based food items to the hostel menu. According to the statement, the action will assist more over five lakh ST and SC boarders in the state.
