Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, Forest and Environment Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha told the Assembly that in the last three years, Odisha had lost 282 elephants and 17 tigers.

93 elephants perished in 2018, 82 in 2019, and 77 in 2020, according to the minister. Until August of this year, 30 elephants have died.

Seven elephants were poached, 43 died of electrocution, 13 died in train accidents, four died in road accidents, and 101 died of disease, according to him. Apart from that, 34 people have died as a result of old age, 59 people have died as a result of various mishaps, and the reason of death for the remaining 21 people is unknown.

The minister stated one Royal Bengal tiger was electrocuted while the rest died of various ailments, referring to the deaths of 17 tigers.

In addition, 15 leopards had died within the same time period. Five were murdered by poachers, one was killed in a railroad accident, two died of old age, and four died of diseases. He went on to say that the cause of death for three leopards was unknown.
