Cuttack: The State Transport Authority (STA) on Thursday issued a notice, stating that it would enforce the fitment and impose penalties on violators starting on October 1. The notice came in response to the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles in Odisha expiring on September 30.

Driving a car with a registration number that ends in 1, 2, 3, or 4 without the HSRP could result in a Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000 punishment.

"HSRP was installed in 593,717 vehicles as of September 13 while 1,065,312 vehicle owners had reserved slots. If a vehicle's HSRP is not installed before the appointed date, an e-challan for Rs. 5,000 or Rs. 10,000 is issued pursuant to Section 192 of M.V. Act, 1988, as the situation requires, would be given," stated Dipti Ranjan Patra, Joint Commissioner of Transportation.

Since June 1 2022, the Transport Department has mandated that all older vehicles have HSRPs attached.

Old licence plates are simple to modify and can be exploited by thieves. The HSRP plates, however, are challenging to replace because they include a non-removable snap-lock. These plates have two non-reusable locks and are tamper-proof, the man stated.

A chromium-based Ashoka Chakra with the word "IND" engraved on it can be seen on a HSRP. The vehicle identifying number will be laser encoded, making it simple to scan and challenging to alter.

Patra continued by saying that the schedule for installing HSRP on other series of vehicles would not change.
