SC grants bail to suspended BJD MLA in car ramming case

New Delhi: Prashant Jagadev, a suspended BJD MLA from Chilika who was charged with ramming his SUV into a crowd on March 12 of this year, was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Monday.

The Supreme Court issued restrictions, stating that Jagadev cannot visit his assembly district for a year. However, he is permitted to enter his district only with the district collector's prior approval. Additionally, he is not permitted to hold any meetings that involve more than five people at once.

The SC stated that the lower court will impose additional bail restrictions.

He had up to 13 complaints lodged against him, according to the Odisha police, who had opposed his request for release on the grounds that he was a habitual offender. In other situations, the MLA received bail with the condition that he not commit any crimes. But he persisted in breaking the bail requirement by committing more horrifying atrocities. Additionally, the police stated that granting bail now might not be safe for the witnesses.

Pinaki Misra, a BJD MP and seasoned attorney, defended Jagadev before the supreme court. He stated that the victims had just minor wounds from the collision, but the police disputed this, stating that one of the victims has been bedridden for the past five months.

Notably, his bail request was denied by the Orissa High Court on May 20.

The Indian Penal Code's Section 307 has been used to charge the Chilika MLA (attempt to murder). He is also charged with preventing police from performing their duties.

The March incident served as a sombre reminder of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri episode, which resulted in the deaths of four farmers protesting and a journalist.
