President Droupadi Murmu addresses the nation

New Delhi: Droupadi Murmu expressed her honour at taking office as India's 15th president after being sworn in on Monday. India is now celebrating its 75th anniversary of independence.

Murmu greeted her audience in Odia with "Sabhi Ko Juhaar!" at the start of her speech. The native of the Mayurbhanj area of Odisha talked about her time working as a teacher at Rairangpur's Sri Aurobindo Integral School and how Sri Aurobindo's ideas continually motivated her.

Santha Kabi of Odisha Bhima Bhoi was also mentioned by the president in her speech. "So far in my life, only through public service have I discovered the purpose of life. Mo jibana pachhe narke padithau, Jagata uddhara heu is a renowned poem by Shri Jagannath Kshetra poet Bhim Bhoi Ji. That is, putting the good of the world above one's own interests, she explained, adding that this has always been her life's credo.

She declared, "I will always be ready to work with complete commitment and dedication with the spirit of the welfare of the planet.

The first President to be born in independent India further said that reaching the highest post in the country was not a personal achievement but that of every poor in India. “It is the power of our democracy that a daughter born in a poor house, a daughter born in a remote tribal area, can reach the highest constitutional post of India,” she said.

It gives me satisfaction to know that the poor, Dalits, backward, and tribal people who have been denied development for so long can regard me as a reflection of them. The underprivileged have given their blessing to my nomination. It also reflects the aspirations and potential of millions of women, she continued.

Murmu is the second woman to hold the top constitutional position after Pratibha Patil and the first tribal woman in the nation. She is also the second person from Odisha, after VV Giri, to hold the position of president of the nation.

She went on to say that numerous independence fighters, including Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, and Chandrasekhar Azad, have served as role models by prioritising national pride above all else. "The Santhal Revolution, the Paika Revolution, the Coal Revolution, and the Bhil Revolution significantly reinforced the tribal contribution to the liberation war. We were motivated by 'Dharti Aba' Bhagwan Birsa Munda's sacrifice for social advancement and patriotism,' she remarked.

"I have witnessed the zeal and tenacity of the nation's youth. According to Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, when the youth of the nation advance, they not only shape their own destiny but also the fate of the entire nation. We can see it becoming true right now. All of our sisters and daughters should contribute more to every area of the nation, she continued.
