Droupadi Murmu takes oath as India's 15th President
New Delhi: On Monday in the Central Hall of Parliament, Droupadi Murmu was sworn in as the fifteenth President of India by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana. Then there was a 21-gun salute.
Speaking to the country, Murmu expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead at a time when India is celebrating its 75th anniversary of independence.
"I respectfully greet all of my fellow countrymen from this holy Parliament, a representation of the rights and aspirations of all Indian citizens. As the first President born in an independent India, she added, "Your love, trust, and support will be my greatest strength in carrying out my functions and obligations.
Murmu is the second woman to hold the top constitutional position after Pratibha Patil and the first tribal woman in the nation. After Dr. S. Radhakrishnan (1962–1967), Dr. Zakir Hussain (1967–1969), Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma (1992–1997), K.R. Narayanan (1997–2002), and Pranab Mukherjee, she is the youngest president with a teaching background at 64. (2012-17).
Murmu honoured Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat earlier in the day. At Rashtrapati Bhavan, she later met the departing president Ram Nath Kovind and his wife Savita Kovind. President-elect Draupadi Murmu and outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind then departed Rashtrapati Bhavan for Parliament.
At Parliament, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla, and Chief Justice NV Ramana welcomed the cavalcade that was escorting Droupadi Murmu and Ram Nath Kovind.
M. Venkaiah Naidu, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Om Birla, the speaker of the Lok Sabha, members of the Council of Ministers, state governors, chief ministers, heads of diplomatic missions, members of parliament, and top civil and military officials of the Indian government all attended the ceremony of assumption of office.
All of the Mayurbhanj MLAs from the district in Odisha that Murmu is a part of, as well as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, were present.
