Balangir: On Thursday, two female Maoists were killed in an exchange of fire with security troops in the Gandhamardhan hills of Odisha's Balangir district, according to Director General of Police Sunil Bansal.

According to him, the Special Operations Group (SOG) had initiated a combing operation in the hills based on particular intelligence inputs when the gunfight with a group of Maoists in the area erupted.

As the Maoists opened fire on the security forces, the SOG members replied in self-defense, killing the two Maoists.

According to reports, the exchange of fire lasted roughly 30 minutes. According to Bansal, a search operation was conducted in the region, and the bodies of two female Maoists in uniform and two INSAS rifles were retrieved.

Both killed naxals were area committee members (ACM) of the proscribed organisation and were from Chhattisgarh. They were members of the proscribed outfit's Bolangir-Bargarh-Mahasamud division.

On their heads were incentives of Rs 4 lakh each. Three more Maoists are said to have escaped the scene, and efforts are being made to find them.

Soon after the gunfight, combing activities were stepped up and more teams were deployed to the region. Police also urged Maoists to abandon violence and integrate into society.

"I appeal to the Maoists once more to abandon violence and join the mainstream," the DGP remarked.
