Kolkata rape-murder case: B R Singh Hospital conducts medical examination of former principal Sandip Ghosh.

Doctors from B. R. Singh Hospital, Eastern Railway, conducted medical tests on Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical Hospital and College, and three others who were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for alleged financial irregularities. The medical examinations were completed late on Monday night at the CBI’s anti-corruption branch in West Bengal.
Dr. Ghosh, along with two vendors, Biplav Singha and Suman Hazar, and additional security personnel Afsar Ali, faces accusations of corruption at the medical college and hospital. The investigation was initiated following a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which instructed the CBI to probe the matter.
Union State Minister Sukanta Majumdar commented on the arrests, stating that while he had anticipated Dr. Ghosh’s arrest in the corruption case, he was skeptical about the possibility of charges related to a separate rape and murder case involving a postgraduate trainee doctor due to insufficient evidence. Majumdar highlighted the public’s demand for accountability and noted that an official FIR was registered against Dr. Ghosh on August 24, as per the High Court’s orders.
In related developments, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata suspended Dr. Ghosh’s membership amid the ongoing corruption investigation. Additionally, junior doctors in Kolkata staged protests demanding the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. The protestors expressed dissatisfaction with the police handling of the case and the alleged evidence tampering during the four days the Kolkata Police managed the investigation.
Protestors have vowed to continue their demonstrations until Commissioner Goyal meets with them or steps down. They have also raised concerns about the handling of the case during the period when it was under the Kolkata Police’s jurisdiction.
